Healthy Weight Management Clinical Guide
This is a 65-page, spiral-bound, low-literacy guide to healthy weight management. It is for patients and health care providers to use together in the primary care setting. It is available in English and Spanish and can be purchased HERE.
It has three purposes:
- to provide patient education to patients about healthy weight management
- to serve as a guide for clinicians who want to provide evidence-based information on healthy weight management
- to serve as a resource for health promoters or health educators to provide one-on-one case management to patients.
Cover: Books available in English or Spanish. Both are low-literacy.

There are 7 sections:
–
1. What is Healthy Weight Management?
2. Being More Physically Active
3. Choosing Healthy Foods and Beverages in the Right Amounts
4. Managing Stress and Emotions in a Healthy Way
5. Keeping Track of Our Progress
6. Helping Kids to Manage Their Weight
7. Provider Tools (this section has no text, just additional tools for providers).
The guide emphasizes evidence-based nutrition messages (increasing vegetable consumption, whole grains, healthy sources of protein and water instead of other beverages). It also recommends daily physical activity (up to an hour) and healthy stress management. Logging changes (through various methods) is encouraged. There are no guidelines for counting calories or grams, and no specific diet is promoted.

Dark blue callout boxes emphasize important messages.
Each section has "Try This!" boxes in light blue, suggesting goals.

At the end of every section there is a list of Tools (in the orange box) that patients can take home. The Tools are in a pocket folder at the end of each section, and can be replaced by copying them or ordering more.
The Tools are meant to be practical ways of overcoming barriers to healthy weight management strategies. This shopping guide has items to look for on the front, and items to avoid on the back. It is a 1/4 sheet size and laminated, so people can bring it with them to the store.

Three copies of each tool are included with every guide. All tools in the pocket folders can be refilled by either downloading them for free, or ordering them in any quantity from the printer. In this way, the books can be used for a long time with many patients.
We are available for consultations for trainings on how to use the books, talking with clinicians or health educators or helping set up an evaluation plan for their use. Contact us at 541-308-8386 if you are interested in a consultation, or just want more information.
The cost of the books is $60 each, $120 for a pair of English and Spanish.
The cost of the tools for refills are as follows:
